In the Garden – Completed

In the Garden 72dpi

“In the Garden” is now complete. I actually finished it last week, but haven’t found the time to post about it. While I won’t go into detail about what I did, I’ll give a few tidbits here.

This took a while. Getting the coloring just right was vexing. The drawing lent itself to being very green, too green. I had to break that up quite a bit. The shadowing on the leaves behind the mayfly is an example of that. I added a blue wash to the ivy and a red wash to the cherry leaves. The minute I added that, the mayfly really popped forward in the picture, whereas before it seemed very flat.

I enjoyed doing the flowers in the lower right quite a bit. I could have spent a lot more time on them. Now that doesn’t mean they would have looked better, or have had more detail. That just means the detail freak in me could have spent way too much time adding stuff. One of the major themes of my artistic life has been learning to reign in that detail freak.

Painting in and around the spider web was tricky. This mostly involved a lot of masking, but even then how much to mask or not to mask?

I don’t think I will do any bugs for a while. I enjoyed creating “In the Garden”, but I think I’m a little bugged out right now. I am thinking of picking random fairy tales (original versions, not watered down Disney versions) and illustrating scenes from those. I will avoid going too graphic with any of the images, but I always liked the original Hans Christian Andersen and Brothers Grimm stories much better.
